Can Makers Announce 2024 Design Accolade Winners.

Can Makers, the trade body for UK drinks can manufacturers, has confirmed four brands – Potts Cooking Sauces, Touch of Fruit Sparkling by Volvic, Ghost Ship Beyond the Pale Ale and Badger ‘Fursty Ferret’ and ‘Tangled Foot’ – will receive the coveted Can Makers Design Accolade, in the first round of the 2024 awards.

Tango Mango was also commended and received a special mention for innovation in design and printing, with judges particularly impressed by its printed can ends.

More than 12 new can designs were reviewed by the Can Makers’ judging panel, which noted the exceptionally high quality that has become the norm for brands adopting the can or launching new beverages in cans.

Tim Conybeare, Can Makers chairman, said: “The winning designs have raised the bar once again, redefining the possibilities for new entrants to the canned beverage market and those adopting the aluminium can, helping brands to create a premium position through striking design. Potts impressed the panel with its bold colours, eye-catching graphics and intricate design. The judges were also impressed by the innovative use of the traditional beverage can to package cooking sauces.

“Volvic Sparkling Water was praised for the consistency of the brand across multiple formats, using digital proofing to present different finishes and its bold design. Ghost Ship Pale Ale was commended for its complex, innovative design and high print quality and Badger Beer impressed the panel with its bold background colour, strong branding and detailed illustrations.”

Ian Butt, Commercial director, Potts Partnership Ltd, said: “It’s fantastic that Potts’ has been recognised for this award amongst such strong brands. Aluminium packaging continues to drive innovation and sustainability across lots of categories and we continue to innovate in our own business with the can format.”

Tim Conybeare added: “The exceptionally high standards of can design in evidence across the beverage market today are testament to the unique properties of the aluminium can, and to the possibilities this offers for brands which recognise its potential to showcase their premium products in all market segments.

“It has been particularly satisfying to see so many brands demonstrate their understanding of the aluminium can’s properties and how to use them effectively with technically detailed, bold designs.”

Launched in 2022, the Design Accolades celebrate outstanding design and creative excellence in the canned beverage industry. They highlight exceptional shelf presence and brand positioning.

The Accolades are awarded bi-annually, with the judging panel set to meet again in the Autumn.
